Indoor Training Classes are BACK!!!

We just rounded the corner on 2011 and finished up the remodel, now it's time to get back into the swing of things here!

With Spring looming on the horizon its time to get those legs and lungs back into riding shape. Classes are in full effect and run Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5:30 pm till 7 pm and Saturday mornings at 8 am till 9:30 am. Bring your bike and riding gear, we have trainers, mats and blocks for those who need.

Okay, we are two weeks away from what will be one of the coolest events Colorado Springs has seen! The 24 Hours of Colorado Springs is Oct. 1 and 2 at Palmer Park, one of the Springs best cycling spots and on top of that it is USA Cycling Nationals, so the Stars and Strips will be handed out to the winners. There has never been a 24 hour race so centrally located in a city like this race will be here in Springs, so you need to get out and ride it or watch some of it!

There is also the 24 minutes of COS for all the kids that can get out and rip around! We are dropping this in with "Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day" this is an international event created by IMBA and supported by Ascent Cycling and Specialized to get more kids riding and this years date is Oct 1st. So get those little ones out and lets have some fun, the kids will walk away with some very cool stuff also.

Last race is Sunday, June 19 at Cheyenne Mountain State Park

Start times for all races will be 9:00-9:30 at short intervals. All classes/categories will

be on the course at the same time as we expect about 100 riders.

Course will be marked on Saturday, June 18 beginning around 1:00 PM.

Course map. 1 lap = 8+/- miles plus start "loop" @ 2 +/- miles

Under 14's Boy's and Girls @ 1 Lap = 10+/- miles

Category 3's & Clydedales @ 2 laps = 18 +/- miles

Category 2's, 1's, Pro's & Singlespeed Men @ 3 laps = 26 +/- miles

Venue is Cheyenne Mountain State Park and there is a $7/vehicle/day fee.

Parking/Registration/Start is in the western most parking lot by the main trailhead/pavilion. Finish is just west of the pavilion.

Ascent Cycling is proud to congratulate Nick & Tracy Thelen on an outstanding performance at the recent 24 Hours of Old Pueblo race in Tuscon, AZ. Team 10 MPG posted an astonishing 18 laps & an impressive 2nd place finish in the Co-Ed Duo category! The weather conditions were as much a factor as the course and the 24 hour grind, adding that 3rd element to an already grueling event. Nick and Tracy both charged through the inclement conditions posting consistent lap after lap. Nick smoked one lap at 1:08:29 and Tracy blitzed the course at 1:16:27. That's 16.3 miles & 1,200 ft of vertical gain per lap!!! We are so happy they traveled safe, raced incredibly well, and showed AZ racers what Front Range CO speed is all about. Congrats Nick & Tracy!

Winter Trainer Rides!

Patrick will be leading the Ascent Cycling winter trainer rides starting this Saturday at 8:00am!

Ride Schedule:

Monday: 6pm to 7:30pm

Wednesday: 6pm to 7:30pm

Saturday: 8am to 9:30am

These rides will be aimed at keeping the fitness you gleaned in the summer thru the winter for a more fun spring.

To participate, bring your bike with a trainer appropriate tire set up to the shop along with your trainer-- if you don't own your own, please give us a call so we can reserve one of ours for you.

Each workout will be different, i.e. one evening Top Gun may play and each time someone says 'Maverick' there will be a 2 minute standing interval. For more structure to your workouts, please speak with Clay or Patrick. They can set up your work-out schedule according to Chris Carmichael's time-crunched cyclist.

Help Us Catch a Thief

Over the course of the past 10 months, there have been many bike shop robberies, usually occurring in series. On October 5, Carmichael Training Systems was robbed (again).

The following article was posted by CTS:

"Carmichael Training Systems was the victim of a burglary early on the morning of October 5, 2010. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the first time we’ve been hit this year, and we’re not alone. Almost every bike shop in Colorado Springs has been burglarized this year – several shops have been hit more than once, despite everyone’s efforts to increase security in their buildings – and in recent weeks the bicycle thieves have also struck the homes of coaches and athletes in the city. Though the police are actively investigating these crimes and have some strong leads, we’re hopeful that the cycling and endurance sports communities along the Front Range may be more successful at finding the perpetrators.

These thieves are not amateurs; they know bikes and target exactly what they’re looking for. They steal a handful of bikes (3-5) at a time. The police theory is that they are stripping the bikes down and selling them in pieces, since it’s far less noticeable to sell a stolen set of cranks, a shock, a set of wheels, etc., rather than a complete bike. This may explain why, when given a choice of what to take, they have often focused on bikes with newest, most expensive parts. A few months ago the police did apprehend one thief they believe to be part of the group that is perpetrating these crimes, and for a short time the burglaries stopped. We were informed by the police that they believe the primary motive for the group is to generate cash to buy drugs. In recent weeks the burglaries have begun again, and at least this time we caught one thief on camera.

Based on their knowledge of cycling equipment, there’s a decent chance they were part of our community as athletes at some point, and they could still be part of the athletic community. You may have ridden with them or maybe even worked with them in bike shops before they turned to their current vocation. With all due respect to our cash-strapped police force in Colorado Springs, property crimes are a low priority, which is why we’re turning to the endurance sports community. Somebody out there knows who is doing this, and people out there are buying stolen bike parts. These thieves are hurting your local bike shops and your fellow athletes.

In the most recent burglary, the following bikes were stolen from CTS:

2010 Gary Fisher Superfly hardtail 29er Mountain Bike, size 17.5, white with red accents. It has a full SRAM XX groupo.
2010 Niner Air 9 hardtail 29er mountain bike, size Medium, silver frame. It has a white Fox 32 F29 RLC fork with 15mm thru-axle, SRAM XX components, Avid Elixir brakes, and Stan’s Crest wheels with red Hope hubs.
2009 Orbea OCAM Team 26-inch wheeled full-suspension mountain bike, size Medium, carbon frame with gray swingarm. It has a full XTR 970 gruppo.

Even though the owners of the bikes would like them back, recovering the stolen bikes isn’t what’s most important; there are thieves in our midst, and until we find them everyone who has invested their hard-earned money in high-quality bikes is at risk of having those bikes stolen.

Help us catch a thief. Forward this story and video to your friends in the endurance athletic community throughout the Front Range and beyond. If you have any information that might help the investigations, please contact Colorado Springs Police main dispatch at 719-444-7000 or the Gold Hill Division at 719-385-2100. Update on Mountain Group Ride

The 24 hour mountain bike race circuit seems to have been growing tremendously in the past several years. Many people travel from all over to ride in these races, whether it's for fun or to be competitive. Well, there is a new 24 hour race this year!
Ascent Cycling is proud to sponsor the upcoming 24 Hours of Colorado Springs that will be held at the United States Air Force Academy! The race will start at noon on 18 September, 2010 and end at noon on 19 September, 2010.

Registration will happen in 2 stages. Initial registration is open and must be completed by 11 Spetember, 2010. The second stage is packet pickup here at Ascent Cycling starting on 15 September, 2010.

Ok, so Morgan Hill has not forgotten about the women's bike......let's say sick!!!

Safire, a bike that takes the bar and tosses it aside.

With a whole new design and thought into this bike, Specialized hits a home run. They took 12 women and R&D this bike for months. Ladies from all types of riders for all styles of riding. They increased the confidence that this bike gives the rider, lowered the stack height and stand over. Gave it custom tuned suspension, tapped the head top for more predictable control. All in all there is so much in this bike, you just need to touch it, ride it and buy it. SICK....

Myka FSR, no longer the step sister.

With the same killer ride style as the Safire, Myka FSR gives it at a price point that all ladies can go "fully" and still have all the value. Rockin an all new XC trail M4 frame and hydraulic disc brakes at all levels, Myka is a full on player in this market. With successful FSR that has been fine tuned since 93' Specialized has looked for this bike to step up and run.

Myka HT 29er, the big wheel bike built from the ground up.

With the ladies wanting and asking for a 29 for the reason the boys wanted them, Morgan Hill steps up. Control, speed, and confidence inspiring stability, the Myka 29 hits three points to drive home in this bike: First, Stack height was one of the two big ones. By going with an integrated headset, flat bars and 80mm of custom tuned suspension, its one of the lowest in its class. Second, Reach was the next hurdle to face. By focusing a geometry that keeps toe over lap out of the picture and top tubes that are comfortable all the way down to the 15 inch bike. Third and super cool, Standover that is super low yet aggressive. At 687 in the 15 inch it still allows for control getting on and off the bike. With careful thought the 29er is full of details from the ground up for just the ladies. This one will be fun.

Today I was able to get out on three bikes from the S.

First: Tarmac SL3 DA

This bike has a ton of energy all balled up and ready to blow. There is no reason for anyone to dope on this bike. It is pure speed, pure fun, and pure race. The Tarmac is a bike for the person looking to get out a race; it's not going to be a bike for the weekend guy to go drop 100 miles on, we will get to that bike in a bit. The bike is stiff yet very comfy on bad roads. It is quick to respond to a standing climb or sprint; it just hauls the mail...

Second: Allez Comp Apex

WOW! This bike is so Tarmac in feel...At 1400 bucks, no one in the bike world will top Specialized at this price. Fast is one of many words that can paint this bike; fun is yet another. The one word I would use is, Holy Cow. Ok it's two words but.....Holy Cow. You need to ride this bike to get the word or words of your choice.

Third: Roubaix SL2 Elite

If you want to feel like a champion every weekend, the Roubaix SL2 is your bike. Century rides or bad roads? No problem! Not in your best form and have a big ride? Don't sweat it. The Roubaix will carry you home. At $2000, it is all the bike you'll ever need.

2011 Specialized Camber

There is a new work horse in the barn at Specialized: the Camber. The Camber is not a bike to replace the older FSR XC, but a totally new look in this category for 2011.

This is what the boys in Morgan Hill have to say about it:

"If it's your first "fully" or a hard-earned upgrade, you want a quality system that gives them enough technology and capability to smoke your friends...."

I was able to put in an hour ride today on the Camber. Does hold up to the Big Red S claim to smoke your friends? YES!!!

This bike is a super buy. It's going to open up the world of trail riding to a group of riders that do not have the coin for a Stumpy. With a price range of $1650 to $2900 and 6 models, this bike is going to be a rock star.

I climbed up 5 miles, or 2/3 of the way up Keystone Ski Area, and let me say this bike is a goat. Small bumps are quickly reduced to smooth butter, and the larger ones are no problem at all. The tec climbs were nice and easy. There are three settings on the rear shock: ProPedal, Lockout, and fully open. Hitting a fire road style climb about half way up, I was able to lockout the rear and really put power into the pedals. And man it responded!

The downhill was fast, with good flow and had a few rock gardens that the Fox fork smoothed out. The Camber let me really open up on the speed and really see how the it would react. It is very predictable and comfortable as a trail bike. With 120 mm of travel this bike has enough for most trails in Colorado.

For the person who is looking for a bike to ride all of what Colorado has to throw at you, the Camber is a great bike for you.

Saturday Group Mountain Ride!!

Now that summer is here, it's time to get our Saturday/Summer group ride going again! We will start this Saturday the 19th at 10am. We ride in Palmer Park leaving from the Lazy Land area (on Brenner St. off of Austin Bluffs).

Please note - there will be no ride on July 3rd due to the holiday weekend. I will update any other information about rides including changes and cancellations on this posting.

The Sea Otter Effect

Well with Sea Otter fully under way, things are hitting the web at a very fast pace. Here is the one really cool new release that we here at the shop are drooling over. That's right: 2x10 in the X0 world.

What's really cool about this? It goes from X0 all the way down to X7. There will be a 3x10 also out from SRAM that will use the same ideas found in the XX series.

Indoor Training Classes

With daylight savings time now in full effect, Indoor classes will start up. We will run two night classes on Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 to 7:30. We have trainers, mats and blocks, all you need is your bike and water. I would bring a towel also, the sweat will drip down and a good wipe here and there would be nice.
The night classes have a small cost to them at 5 bucks. We will offer a Saturday morning indoor class from 8 to 9:30 and the cost is FREE there.
So, if you need to keep the winter fat off before it gets on or just maintain a good fitness from the summer join us in one or all of the classes.

Hey everyone, a slight change to the Saturday morning Group Mount ride. We will still be meeting at Palmer Park in the Lazy Land parking area which is on Brenner Street off of Austin Bluffs, but starting now at 10:00 am each Saturday morning at instead 8:30.

This group ride is intended for people of all skill levels to go out and have a good time, you don't have to be an expert. We will work on skills during the rides as well, so if you are looking to improve on something, this is a great opportunity for that too!

So, the foundation is poured and the stem walls are in, the next thing to come is back filling the foundation. After that we should see the rough grade of the parking lot and then walls will happen soon after that. We are still hoping to be in doing our build out around March 5 and hopefully moved in by March 20 to 25. Keep checking in for updates.

Sand Creek Race Series is BACK!

Well, after a great year of racing in 08' the Sand Creek Race Series is back for a bigger and better year in '09. Ascent Cycling was very happy to help kick start the race series back into full swing in 08' with the folks at Sand Creek Sports Inc. A new addition for the 09' season is Carmichael Training Systems as a title sponsor.

The great news for riders and racers is that there are going to be a few more races on the calender. That being said Ascent Cycling is still involved heavily as sponsor and support cast for the events. Sand Creek Sports Inc and Ascent Cycling felt in order to grow the series, they wanted more sponsors involved and when a great organization like CTS steps up, well that speaks huge for the success of 08' and the work put in.

So, the event dates are TBA for the most part, but if anyone has kept an eye on the cycling news, a race for June 13th will be part of a seven race series (USA Cycling Pro MTB XCO) around the nation and the fourth stop is right here in C Springs. The Carmichael Training Systems Sand Creek International Classic is a UCI C3 race (for those who don't understand that little ditty, it's huge, trust us). This race will also be one of about seven races in the Sand Creek Race Series here in our neck of the woods. Thats right seven races here in town, so if you race, watch or simply want to see people putting their hearts and souls into the sport, this is the place to see it.

Well, with all the great weather we have been having it has been hard to get the indoor spin class up and going. So classes will start up Nov. 18 and be Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:00pm till 7:30pm and Saturdays 8:00am till 9:30am. Classes are 5 bucks and must of the time a reservation is needed. So, now is the time to get in shape for this holiday season.

InterBike 2008 !!!

On Monday September 22nd: Clay, Patrick and the Ascent Crew will head to Las Vegas for InterBike. InterBike is the industries annual trade show. This is where they will get to ride, touch and buy the 2009 product for the new store opening in 2009 (more on that later). So, the shop will close at 5:00 pm on Monday and will stay closed till Friday. Regular shop hours will be held on Friday.

They will post a daily blog here on the web site on what caught their eye and other epic things from Vegas. Yes what happens in Vagas stays in Vegas, but they will give some insight on the day.

The Jimmy Files: Fuji Team Issue

I started riding in 2006 and rode with the Ascent Cycling on their Saturday morning ride midway through July 2007. At first (about a ½ mile) I thought the pace was too slow, but I soon learned about altitude and the puking associated with climbing (dry heaves are the best!!!); Florida and the Virginia coast where I moved from don’t have altitude… or hills. After a while I started to get to know the group and quickly learned to put my turtle shell on under my jersey. Nothing… I mean NOTHING is out of bounds at Ascent. I could’ve stayed in the Navy and been harassed less – really! But, that is what makes them so much fun. So, I put forward a few rules.

Rule #1 - Show no fear… EVER!! It’ll just hurt.

Rule #2 - Never ever leave yourself open. If you do… don’t acknowledge it!

Rule #3 - Never share anything personal… Just trust me on this.

Rule #4 - Pat does all the work, Clay just sits at the computer… Accept this fact.

Rule #5 - Abi looks innocent… They’ve taught her well, again trust me on this!

Rule #6 – V looks innocent too… Refer to rule #5.

I’ll think of more rules in my next blog, but you get the picture.

So there we were (inverted on an uphill) riding along when Pat rides up next to me and says… really loud (because road riders don’t have an ego) “Hey did you know that your bike is the same bike they rent at (an unmentionable bike shop near the Santa Fe Trail). Everyone looks… how embarrassing (That frown from Garfield comes to mind about now). At least I was smart enough to not try a come back. Oh yeah, another rule.

Rule #7 - Comebacks should only be verbalized if your coming from the third rope and you’d better have a second comeback formulating.

If you violate this rule, you’ll be very sorry. It’d be like falling into the piranha filled Amazon River while hemorrhaging. The successive months were quick, sharp, never ending reminders of my “rental” bike. Yet, all was in fun, I think???

Pat did a custom fitting on said “rental” that really helped… my riding, not the harassment.

One day I was in the shop getting several new inner tubes (I swear, it’s a conspiracy by the tube manufacturers) when Pat says (in a professional non-condescending way) “We have a great deal on a new Fuji to replace your rental bike”. I try to act cool and shrug it off, but the bug was planted (Don’t fight the bug, just go with it. This isn’t a rule, but more of a guideline or fact). I get home, call the shop and see what the price is... Not bad. As the Man of the house, I immediately tell my wife that “I’m getting a new bike and that’s all there is to it”. To my surprise she gave me permission. Sweet… I call Pat back, get the bike ordered and what seemed to be 13 years later, when you get the bug nothing goes fast enough (It would have been sooner if Clay actually did any work, that I am sure of) my bike is assembled and ready for fitting. The bike is a 2006 Fuji Team Issue; you know… the one with the WCS “rainbow stripes.” I show the bike to my 16 year-old and all he says is “What’s up with the rainbow stripes”? My wife is all over this like white on rice… It was cruel and unusual punishment even for me. People in the riding group were no less ruthless… until they picked it up; 15.6 pounds will quickly get any riders attention. Upon closer inspection, they see Ritchey WCS Carbon everywhere and a full Dura-Ace groupo.

The difference between an aluminum frame, even with those ridiculous “fartz” inserts and a full carbon frame is astonishing. I couldn’t believe how well carbon soaks up the bumps and buzz yet squirts forward with each peddle stroke. The seat is a Selle Italia SLR that looks thin, but kills road hum, fits my backside and works well with my chamois. Ah, time for another rule.

Rule #8 - A chamois should be in direct contact with your… contact area, and never go cheap on the chamois. Again, trust my personal experience on this.

The first few times I shifted I had to look down at my cassette to make sure the chain was moving. Dura-Ace shifting is so smooth and quick… Dura-Ace (Porsche, whatever)… There is no substitute. This brings me to my last rule for now.

Rule #9 - When Pat and Clay say that your new Dura-Ace brakes stop better than your old brakes… believe them or you might almost crash your new 15 pound carbon road bike (need I say more about the brakes).

Wheels - My Fuji came with Cane Creek Volos wheels and bladed spokes. CCV’s aren’t the lightest most flux capacitor wheels out there, but… compared to my old ALX 290’s, it’s like free horsepower. The CCV’s spin up really quick and just for comparison, I put my old rental bike in top gear, hooked it up to my trainer and spun the rear wheel as fast as possible freewheel style. The wind from the spokes was really strong (maybe a good thing on an indoor trainer with no ventilation). There was virtually no wind from the CCV bladed spokes.

My Fuji Team Issue goes way faster than I can go, but never feels twitchy or out of control. It holds a nice tight line flying through Garden of the Gods and is rock steady on long downhill speed runs at the Air Force Academy. Bottom line: If your not worried about pedigree name brands (S and T), but want great performance, quality and light weight, stop by Ascent Cycling for a Fuji demo, or show up Saturday mornings at 7:30 and ride with us.

All Mountain - What everyone is looking for, and few actually find

All Mountain is a term utilized by bike companies to describe the one stop shop - quiver killing - do it all mountain bike...... How many bike companies have actually achieved this coveted masterpiece of two wheeled splendor?? To put it bluntly... VERY FEW. Bikes in the All Mountain category are 6 inch travel platforms designed to handle cross country when desired, but are typically geared towards more aggressive riding like drops, rock gardens, and all the technical riding you can stomach. What the All Mountain genre typically lacks is the ability to stay in the saddle during a difficult or long sustained climb without realizing a bad case of "Elvis Leg" very quickly as All Mountain bikes are typically heavier than a 5 inch travel trail bike. Is it possible to have your cake and eat it too?? The answer is yes... you can even have a warm cup of your favorite coffee with your cake; you're welcome says Rocky Mountain with a smirk on their face.

If this is the type of bike you seek, do yourself a favor and ride the under-publicized, under-appreciated, and under-recognized Rocky Mountain Slayer SXC. After riding many different bikes, owning many different bikes, I had an opportunity to ride the Slayer SXC in Palmer Park for several hours after one of our demo days. I ordered one 3 days later, yes, it was that good. The SXC stands for SUPER-cross country, which is how Rocky Mountain defines All Mountain. This is very appropriate as the Slayer SXC handles drops, technical climbs and descents, and your favorite cross country loops like Falcon Trail with equal poise, leaving you with that big smile, the desired outcome of every ride!

Patrick and I recently went on a ride into Cheyenne Canyon which took us up Buckhorn then down Captain Jacks and through the Chutes. I believe it was twice on this excursion that I heard Patrick yell, "Is there anything that this bike doesn't do well!?!?!" That is obviously a rhetorical question, the answer is simply no. I am continually amazed at the Slayer's strengths in every area. It climbs amazingly well, I continue to climb things that I have struggled with in the past. It descends like a downhill bike with the always desired, bottomless feeling super-plush rear wheel travel. It is very nimble and turns very quickly thanks to it's shorter wheel base and balanced geometry. The bike's can do will do attitude is truly confidence inspiring for any rider, and forces you to ride at a higher level.

Alright, time to lay out the specs on my particular build. Keep in mind, this is not the way that the bike comes from Rocky Mountain, I changed the specs based upon personal preference:

I have been asked many times, why did you go with a Shimano XT build on an All Mountain bike?? To me the answer is a no brainer, but let me explain. XT is light, durable, and probably most important it is very reliable. I am a true fan of the XT drivetrain as it shifts with incredible ease, and without that incredibly annoying ka-chunk sound that you get from a Yugo (or other bike drivetrains) Again, all of this is personal preference and not the build that typically comes on any of the Slayers from Rocky Mountain. The Slayer SXC frame performance and quality makes everything else an afterthought anyway, just buy one and smile all the way to and from your favorite ride!
